clean it up! blog

The rain came down. The road was closed. Trees had fallen across the roadways. Creeks were overflowing with causeways flooding. We were stranded.

While at Bundanon the Australian / U.S. / Swedish artist group, Robyn Backen, Ian Hobbs, Daniel Peltz and Sissi Westerberg, merged their varied backgrounds in an exploration of responsibility concerning cleaning up. They explored how waste is constituted and what it might mean to ‘CLEAN IT UP!’ as part of an ongoing international research project led by Peltz and Westerberg’s Swedish arts organization Rejmyre Art Lab’s Center for Peripheral Studies. Due to the corona-effect, Daniel and Sissi worked remotely from Sweden and then Finland. The long-distance exchange offered a unique and challenging shift to the direction of the work. Developing varied approaches to the questions concerning waste; and an opportunity to initiate work ready for the proposed residency at Sydney College of the Arts, the University of Sydney in April 2021 with the support of Gilbert Fellowship and the Sydney Environmental Institute.
