This website contains works for a pop-up exhibition of site-specific artworks intended initially for the new SCA campus to accompany the Birds and Language Conference (19 — 20 August 2021), The University of Sydney. These works would have been displayed alongside vitrines of taxidermy birds and other bird artefacts once used as pedagogical tools for students learning to become science teachers. Many of the works critique systems that order, classify and categorise nature to exploitative ends.

Fisher Library is the home to a printing workshop housing an Albion letterpress printer, affectionately known as the Piscator Press. The Albion printing press was purchased by the library in the early 1960s and it was the passion of former University Librarian, Harrrison Bryan. The workshop also houses a second, smaller printing press. A 3D printer is also available for use in the library. https://library.sydney.edu.au/collections/rare-books/events/printer-in-residence/

My first type writer art - Clean it up! series

I attended Barbara’s typewriter workshop this afternoon. After an historical introduction to each typewriter, I settled to type on a blue Olivetti. The flour mill studio was a great space to work in with, Chris, Debbie and Sarah. We all had very different approaches to creating on the analogue machines.

The Clean it up! workshop with Robyn Backen, Daniel Peltz, Sissi Westerberg and Ian Hobbs. All of our plans were lost due to the virus, so we carried on in remote sessions.

Zoom Meeting (including Novi)

Zoom Meeting (including Novi)

While at undertaking a residency at Bundanon the Australian / U.S. / Swedish artist group, Robyn Backen, Ian Hobbs, Daniel Peltz and Sissi Westerberg, merged their varied backgrounds in an exploration of responsibility concerning cleaning up. We explored how waste is constituted and what it might mean to ‘CLEAN IT UP!’ as part of an ongoing international research project led by Peltz and Westerberg’s Swedish arts organisation Rejmyre Art Lab’s Centre for Peripheral Studies. Due to the corona-effect, Daniel and Sissi worked remotely from Sweden and then Finland. The long-distance exchange offered a unique and challenging shift in the direction of the work. Developing varied approaches to questions concerning waste; and an opportunity to initiate work ready for the proposed residency at Sydney College of the Arts, the University of Sydney in April 2021, support of the Gilbert Fellowship and the Sydney Environmental Institute.

Unexpected Cleaning up

The rain came down. The road was closed. Trees had fallen across the roadways. Creeks were overflowing with causeways flooding. We were stranded.

About Western Sydney Parklands Accelerator

17 March 2020

The Western Sydney Parklands Arts and Cultural Accelerator was an innovative 10-day development lab involving artists and professionals from other fields, generating concepts for arts and cultural projects for the parklands and beyond. The accelerator took place over 10 days in February-March 2020, and was an opportunity to share ideas, explored potentials opportunities and share insights.

Michael Cohen led the accelerator, and the artists included: Robyn Backen, Djon Mundine, James Nguyen, Marian Abboud, David Capra, Shay Tobin, Stephanie Peters and Anna Kuroda.

This accelerator brought together the ideas from the landscape design framework that includes the development of arts and culture in the southern section of the Western Sydney Parklands which City People created with Tyrrell Studio.
